Sponsorship. . . For Better or For Worse: The Impact of Sponsorship on the Equality Rights of Immigrant Women

This report reviews the provisions in Canadian immigration legislation which address family reunification by allowing immigration to Canada through sponsorship by a relative. The report acknowledges a difficulty in balancing the importance of family reunification with protection of women who are potentially vulnerable to abusive spouses. The report reviews the legal framework governing the sponsorship system and assesses the extent to which this framework limits the equality rights of migrant women.

Sexual Violence and Armed Conflict: United Nations Response: Women 2000

This report considers the failure of the international community to address the issue of war-time sexual violence during the early years of the UN. Developments are traced to the early 1990s when the international community finally recognized that human rights violations committed against women during armed conflict, including sexual violence, violate fundamental principles of international human rights and humanitarian law. In the second part of this issue, the manner in which sexual violence during armed conflict emerged as an item of serious concern within the UN is examined.

World Report 1999

This part of the World Report 1999 focuses on the rights of women. This report documents and analyzes the state of women's human rights in 1998. Some of the analysis is based on the work of Human Rights Watch itself while the rest is based on reports from activists and the press. The overall conclusion is that states not only tolerate but also commit acts of violence and discrimination against women. Such violence and discrimination is in fact the norm in most of the countries reviewed.
