Using Human Rights in Maternal Mortality Programs: From Analysis to Strategy

The author of this article argues that the high mortality rates experienced by pregnant women globally are largely preventable. She advocates a broad-based movement informed by human rights to overcome maternal death and disability by improving access to, and the quality of, emergency obstetric care services, and prioritizing maternal health issues at the clinical and national policy levels. The author uses human rights principles to assert that governments have an obligation to address the health concerns of pregnant women.

This submission addresses Bill C-11 which proposed changes to Canada's immigration legislation and focuses on the extent to which these changes can protect the rights of women who have been trafficked. The report begins with a review of the international legal framework governing trafficking in women and outlines Canada's international legal obligations. The report then turns to the specific elements of the legislation and advocates an explicit inclusion of Canada's international human rights obligations and an increased recognition of the vulnerability of women to trafficking exploitation.
