Toward a Feminist Analytics of the Global Economy

This article examines some of the central dynamics of globalization from a gender perspective. The author stresses the importance of identifying strategic sites in which to study globalization and focuses her analysis in this article on global cities and international law. With respect to global cities, the author discusses the valorization of certain work cultures over others, noting the devalorization of those types of employment in which women tend to predominate.

Women's Burden: Counter-Geographies of Globalization and the Feminization of Survival

This article explores the systemic links between cross-border profit-making circuits, such as sex trafficking and labour migration, and the economic conditions in developing countries resulting from globalization. Women make up a majority of these circuits as households have become increasingly dependent on women for their survival. The author characterizes these circuits as examples of counter-geographies of globalization. This term is used to refer to trends that are not often included within discussions of globalization despite being directly or indirectly linked to its associated effects.

Sex Work, HIV/AIDS and Human Rights in Central and Eastern Europe

This report is based on a study of organizations that work with sex workers in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It begins by analyzing the sex work industry and providing background information on HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) trends. The next section focuses on the impact of international human rights treaties, the different regulatory approaches that various countries have taken to sex work and to the human rights of sex workers. After an overview of existing services for sex workers in the region, the report ends with recommendations.

Women and AIDS: Confronting the Crisis

This report addresses gender inequality, poverty and AIDS. It describes efforts to reduce the AIDS epidemic and recommends providing women with knowledge and a means to prevent HIV infection, as well as overall access to primary and secondary education and women's literacy. The report emphasizes the need for equal and universal access to treatment for the infection. It notes the link between violence and AIDS and recommends zero tolerance to any forms of violence.
