The fundamental issue considered within this article is the intersection of women's rights with self-determination and the impact of Canadian legislation upon the empowerment of Indigenous women. The article undertakes a systematic analysis of state policy relating to gender relationships. There is a historical review of relevant Canadian legislation, primarily focused on the Indian Act and its impact upon Indigenous women's rights. The article also reviews the social consequences of Bill C-31 for Indigenous women.
