Family law determines the power a woman has towards marriage, divorce, property, children, and employment. While liberalization of family law has occurred throughout the world in the last half of the 20th century, some countries continue to enforce discriminatory family law systems. This paper applies feminist legal theory in assessing the potential to address HIV/AIDS prevention through the promotion of the use of condoms. Part 1 of the paper reviews the nature of the AIDS pandemic and its disproportionate impact on Africa. Part 2 outlines the role of women in African society and their particular vulnerability to HIV infection. Part 3 discusses current efforts to increase the use of condoms as an effective means to prevent HIV/AIDS infection in Africa.

The current asylum laws of the international community do not adequately address the unique needs of female refugees which result from pervasive gender discrimination. This paper advocates the addition of a category of gender to the internationally recognized definition of refugee. Section II outlines the physical and sexual violence committed against women around the world. Section III reviews the international documents that form the basis of modern asylum law and applicable human rights standards.

This note discusses violence against women on a global scale. In order to determine the potential of international instruments to eliminate gender-based violence, the author compares the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women and the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

This article examines some of the central dynamics of globalization from a gender perspective. The author stresses the importance of identifying strategic sites in which to study globalization and focuses her analysis in this article on global cities and international law. With respect to global cities, the author discusses the valorization of certain work cultures over others, noting the devalorization of those types of employment in which women tend to predominate.
