The article describes the ample national
policies and international conventions
that exist to protect the "dignity of
women". Kumar lists and details multiple
international instruments aimed at the
protection of women's rights, such as
CEDAW, the Declaration of Elimination of
Violence against Women, etc. However, due
to the absence of proper strategic bodies
to implement these provisions and women's
unawareness of these policies and
conventions, these policies and
conventions are not enforced, resulting in
the existing vulnerable situation of women
in most areas of the world. Furthermore,
international bodies such as the UN have
failed to incorporate the female
perspective into its machinery at a
fundamental level, feeding into a
patriarchal view of women's rights. She
concludes by arguing that states need to
give substance to the international and
regional treaties and conventions to
accord women the rights to which they are
entitled.
