This article examines the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) throughout the world, arguing the act is a distinct violation of International Human Rights laws that protect a person’s right to health and physical integrity and the right to be free from cruel acts. The first two sections of the article summarize the process of FGM and its cultural origins. The author then positions the practice within international conventions that protect women, all of which urge governments and communities to take immediate steps to eliminate all forms of FGM. Finally, the article assesses the interaction between FGM and the Indian Penal Code specifically. Despite widespread criminalization of FGM in India, the act is still performed secretly in isolated communities for long established socio-cultural and religious reasons, underscoring continued discriminatory attitudes against women.
