This article begins by noting that the reasons for the continuation of the practice of female genital mutilation are complex; issues of politics, gender, culture, nationalism, medical ethics, and law must be considered. The author shows that although the legal treatment of this procedure differs from country to country, its human rights implications transcend national boundaries and cultural beliefs. The article explains the medical procedures associated with emale genital mutilation, explores the legal theories and problems raised by this practice, and concludes with recommendations designed to prohibit the continued practice of female genital mutilation.
