On 21 February 2013, Michelle Bachelet,
the then-Executive Director of UN Women,
delivered the Kapuscinski Lecture on
opportunities for peace, development, and
gender equality in the 21st century. This
document presents her speech. The central
theme is that the coming century has the
potential to enhance women's inclusion in
leadership roles and political
participation. Bachelet suggests that
meeting these goals means that governments
must share the common objectives of
increasing the participation of women in
the public sphere and reducing gender
inequality. Bachelet argues that it is
crucial to ensure that health, education,
sanitation, and social protection are
available for all, with a particular focus
on women and their families.
