The heads of African states and governments agreed to this Charter in 1963. It establishes the Organization of African Unity, an organization to promote the unity and solidarity of African states, to coordinate their efforts to improve the lives of African peoples, to defend their sovereignty territorial integrity and independence, to eradicate colonialism and to promote international cooperation.
