John Hendra, the UN Women Deputy Executive
Director of Policy and Programmes,
delivered this statement on March 11,
2014. The statement presents a recently
revealed, UN-developed "Women in Politics
Map" to illustrate the successes and
challenges of engaging women in politics.
In his statement, Hendra describes the
data presented in the map and emphasizes
that the data must become more robust over
time to accurately reflect the political
progress of women on a global scale post-
2015. The map is primarily a tool to
measure progress and accountability in
meeting gender equality goals in the
public sphere. However, the map does not
account for women's local representation
in politics or female voter turnout.
