In 1987 a coalition of the world's leaders in maternal and child health, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), and the Population Council, joined forces and developed the Inter-Agency Group for Safe Motherhood to assess the problem of maternal deaths and disability and to recommend solutions.
