Globalization and the Inequality of Women with Disabilities

This article considers the effects of globalization on women with disabilities in Canada. Because of the social and economic discrimination faced by women with disabilities, the author argues that they are particularly vulnerable to the effects of globalization. The author considers cuts to social spending, the increase of non-standard forms of employment, the rise of consumerism and the emphasis on individual responsibility as trends that reinforce the marginalization of women with disabilities.

Economics and Rights: Interconnections in the Context of HIV/AIDS and Feminized Poverty

These documents are presentations made at the ministerial roundtables organized by UNIFEM in April 2003 in New York in preparation for ECOSOC meetings in July 2003 in Geneva. The roundtable talks focused on issues such as: the relationship between the spread of HIV/AIDS and food insecurity, women's work in the food production industry, the impact water privatization on poverty, and how economic policies and poverty reduction frameworks can respond.
