This document finds that older Australian women living in rentals showed some level of housing or financial stress and were vulnerable to homelessness if faced with unexpected expenses. This issue is particularly salient because of Australia’s aging population. The majority of women over the age of 55 living in rentals are more likely to do so because of adverse life events, like divorce, loss of employment, health issues, and death of a partner. For those that were divorced, they had experienced violence, abuse, or a partner’s alcohol or gambling addictions. Many of the women in this study had only competed secondary schooling and had little or no savings. The next steps are to determine factors that contribute to housing and financial security among this group and examine challenges that minorities face. Southern Australia, home to the fastest aging population in Australia, has particular imperative to address these challenges.
