Replies to the Secretary-General's Questionnaire on the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action , United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women
In October 1998, the Division for the Advancement of Women sent out a questionnaire to governments on the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (PFA). Government responses that are available electronically are posted on this UN website. The questionnaire was divided into three parts. In Part I governments were asked to provide an analytical overview of trends in implementing the PFA and to highlight major achievements and obstacles. In Part II governments were asked to discuss national budgetary measures to promote women's equality and institutional arrangements for implementing the PFA. In Part III governments were asked to describe policies, programmes and projects initiated to implement the PFA's 12 critical areas for priority action. Governments were also asked to describe future initiatives.

This website was created for the Beijing +10 reveiew at the 19th session of the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women, February 28 to March 11 2005. The site has official documents, a list of non-governmental organization (NGO) participants, press releases, and statements by various UN agencies.

 

Beijing +5 -- Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century , United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (UN DAW)
This site was established for the 'Beijing Plus Five' Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (GA), 5-9 June 2000. At this Special Session, the GA assessed the progress achieved in the implementation of the Nairobi Forward Looking Strategies and the Beijing Platform for Action (PFA), and it considered further initiatives. The site contains information on the preparatory committee, on governmental and non-governmental participants, a press kit and background information. By selecting "Documents", the user can access a variety of relevant materials including PrepComm documents, resolutions, national action plan reports, and the UN Commission on the Status of Women conclusions on the Platform for Action's 12 critical areas of concern.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the main United Nations (UN) policy-making body to promote women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and economic fields. The object of the Commission is to promote implementation of the principle that men and women shall have equal rights. This website provides an overview of the CSW's functions and membership, documents from its annual sessions, and details on the CSW's follow-up to Beijing including the implementation of the Platform for Action (PFA), implementation of the critical areas of concern, gender mainstreaming, and emerging issues.

 

Cairo Conference Home Page , United Nations International Conference on Population and Development
The United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held from September 5-13, 1994, in Cairo, Egypt. During this 2-week period, world leaders, highranking officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies gathered to agree on a Programme of Action. This site, searchable in English and French, contains documentation prepared for the conference, a historical record and follow-up information.

 

Follow up to UN Conferences , Women's Human Rights Net (WHRnet)
Women's Human Rights Net (WHRnet) is a collaborative information and communication technology project developed by an international coalition of women's organizations. WHRnet aims to strengthen advocacy for women's human rights through the effective utilization of information and communication technologies. This section of the WHRnet website highlights information, analyses and debates taking place at the international level on womens human rights. The international level events covered include the 2005 UN World Summit, Beijing +10, activities related to the Millennium Development Goals, and the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

 

Beijing +10 Review and Appraisal , Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
The PeaceWomen website, a project of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, has many documents related to the 2005 Beijing +10 review. There are links to the United Nations (UN) calendar and documents for Beijing +10, to information about government participation and participation of non-governmental organizations as well as to UN expert group meetings, and regional reviews of the Beijing Platform for Action (PFA).

 

Beijing+5 Global Forum , WomenWatch
From September to December 1999, WomenWatch held the Beijing + 5 Global Forum, a series of Internet working groups that discussed ways for furthering women's equality in the 12 critical areas of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action (PFA). WomenWatch issued an open invitation to members of the public to share experiences and ideas along with government representatives, activists, academics, private sector representatives and others. The report of the Beijing + 5 Global forum was submitted to the UN Commission on the Status of Women in its role as Preparatory Committee for the Beijing + 5 Special Session. This site provides access to the final report, information on the Beijing + 5 Global Forum, and the discussions of each working group.

 

Follow-Up to Beijing: National Level , WomenWatch
Paragraph 297 of the Beijing Platform for Action (PFA) called on governments to develop national strategies for implementing the PFA. This site provides access to electronic versions of national action plans that were submitted to the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW). This site also provides a link to DAW summaries of the national action plans.
